Law on Associations Adopted

Serbian Skupština (the Parliament) adopted yesterday, July 8, 2009, the Law on Association which should provide for better regulation of the civil sector in Serbia. According to the Law, an association is a voluntary and nongovermental organization established with the aim to promote and realize general public interests that are not prohibited by the Constitution or Law.

NGO Coalition to Monitor Local Elections in Kosovo

Coalition of the Kosovo nongovernmental organizations “Democracy in Action” presented its initiative to monitor 2009 local elections. Coalition representatives said that it also plans to monitor the work of the Central Election Commission (CEC).

“Once again, we addressed a letter to CEC to allow us to monitor its work and we hope that this time we will manage to get a positive reply for this call”, stated Coalition’s representative Driton Tafallari.

Debate on Law on Prevention of Discrimination Announced

The Joint Committee for Human Rights of the BIH Parliamentary Assembly will debate, on Monday, July 6, 2009, the draft-Law on Prevention of Discrimination and the amendments to the text, after which it will present the House of Representatives and House of Nations with a report. Amendments can be submitted by MPs, Committees, the institution that prepared the Law, and the Council of Ministers.

Trade Unions: Sanader’s Resignation is Not a Moral Act

The Union of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (SSSH) comments that yesterday’s resignation by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader was not a moral act and that it would be “only fair towards the citizens and the electorate” for the Government to admit that it wasn’t able to deal with the accumulated political and economic problems, such as the falling economy and the deteriorating relations with neighbouring countries and EU.
