House of Human Rights Demands Removal of Current HRT Management
8. May 2012 - 8:58 — Dejan GeorgievskiThe associations gathered in the House of Human Rights Zagreb (B.a.b.e., Centre for Peace Studies, Documenta), GONG, the Association for Independent Media Culture (H-Alter) and Croatian P.E.N. Centre demand, in a protest letter, removal from office of current Management of Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) after the management issued warnings before termination of employment contracts to journalists and activists of Croatian Journalist’s Society (HND) Maja Sever and Elizabeta Gojan.

Maja Sever received her official reprimand for her call to colleague Drago Pilsel, in the “Hrvatska uživo” (Croatia Live) programme of April 27, dedicated to the revocal of authorisation of priest don Ivan Grubišić, and Elizabeta Gojan got her last warning for her statements given to Slobodna Dalmacija daily earlier this month.
The associations say that HRT Management has responded to all past warnings by the HTV branch of HND, the trade unions and interested public not with dialogue and changes, but with “threats against professional freedoms and labour rights of journalists and activists who raised their voice to protect HRT as the central public media institution in Croatia”.
The associations also note that the Ministry of Culture and Parliamentary Committee on the Media have not yet taken political responsibility to resolve the crisis at HRT, in spite of their past promises, and demand from the competent institutions to protect the professional freedoms of journalists and resolve the ongoing crisis of management in Croatian Radio and Television.
