FOL Expands its Activities at Municipal Level

The FOL Movement started the expansion of its activities in other municipalities of Kosovo. At the end of April 2012, the Movement has unveiled its expansion goals in Podujeva/Podujevo and Gjakova/Đakovica in a debate with representatives of local institutions, civil society, political parties, media, business sector and the citizens of the two municipalities.

"More than two years after the founding of the Movement FOL, which has, as its primary mission, the promotion of democratic governance, transparency and accountability of the central institutions, we now move to achieve our goals through expansion of our mission at municipal level", FOL Executive Director Petrit Zogaj said.

Zogaj added that the expansion of the movement to Podujeva/Podujevo and Gjakova/Đakovica would bring public oversight of local government and will improve the tools available to the civil society to act as advocate of increased transparency, accountability, and advanced local government reform.

"This is the best way to encourage citizens to express their dissent against fragile public policies against the decisions resulting from the misrule", Zogaj said.

Forms of misrule, mismanagement and malfunctioning of public institutions of central and local levels have led to low reliability in the institutions and simultaneously has caused civic indifference to political, social and economic developments.

"The Movement will focus on increasing public supervision over local government institutions in these two municipalities, encouraging active citizenship through involvement of relevant actors and citizens in decision making processes", Zogaj said.

These meetings were followed by a discussion on appropriate forms for advancement of levels of cooperation between civil society, local government, media and other relevant sectors in promotion of transparency, accountability and good governance in these municipalities. (Source: Fol Movement)
