Linux vs. Windows5. June 2012 - 13:05 — Sanela Gojak
This is one of the best known examples of free software and of development based on open source. Unlike other operating systems, its code is publicly available and everyone has the right to freely use, modify and redistribute it.
Internet rumors have circulated for years about Linux as an operating system that is complex, difficult to install, and similar. Yes, that was true, but at the beginnings of Linux.
Of course, during the last few years this has changed. Today, Linux has complete GUI (graphical user interface) for installation. This means that now even new Linux users can run the CD or DVD, following the instalation process step by step. Linux can also be installed on a PC with Windows (on a separate partition on your hard disk).
Also, Linux can run Windows applications.
On the other hand, commercial software comes with the license agreement. Whether for a home user or a large company, the license must be purchased in order to use the software for each computer on which it is installed.
Starting price for the computer with the operating system will be far lower with Linux than with Windows.
With time, you will have to upgrade your operating system (for a bit lower price), but when the Windows version is obsolete and no longer supported, you will have to pay back the initial price for the operating system.
There are also hidden costs of which "suffer" both sides, but when analyzed further, the results show that the costs are much lower when using the open source system.
In general, Linux is more secure system than Microsoft Windows. Partly due to the fact that justifies the claim, because Linux is open source, and since the code is available to everyone, potential security problems can be identified quickly. This is a huge advantage over Microsoft Windows, where there are many people who want to undermine the security of the operating system, but only Microsoft can patch them because only they have access to the code.
At the same time, the closed Microsoft code prevents other companies to identify potential problems in time, which is a major drawback.
